Shortcut around meta-analysis for estimating model parameters?

What is the best way to estimate model parameters from many estimates in the medical literature – short of a formal meta-analysis?  Of course, meta-analysis techniques are best for this purpose, but they are also rather burdensome.  What shortcut techniques produce similar estimates?
