Time reporting in TreeAge Pro

How are people using the time reporting feature in TP?  For additional reporting? Debugging? Other?

  • I've tried using it to debug a DES model but really struggled to understand what it was doing. Maybe it would help if a tutorial was posted on how to use time reporting for debugging DES models? I find it easier switching on console output for internal calculations, but this is impractical for more than a few samples/trials.

  • Yes, the internal calculations are not practical for large models. There are some debug functions which can let you look at specific values or expressions in your model. (Take a look at the other post in this community about Debugging.)

In regards to Time Reporting, one of the keys to using it is to make sure you are not “skipping records without data updates”. You need to make sure this box is unchecked when you turn time reporting on in Tree Preferences > Analysis Settings > Time Reporting Selection. This will allow all details to be followed in the time report.

In the time reporting output, make sure you are selecting the All Data Report, and then just select the first 5 or 10 trials to look at. The key to debugging the output is looking at the node ID, type or label and creating a key. The key will help you understand which nodes your trial is passing through and that rewards are being accumulated correctly at those nodes.

I think a tutorial detailing how this could be done is a great suggestion. In the meantime, I can refer you to section 40.12 in the Help files where there is an example model and description.
